Once I started the first mission I was surprised to hear Esperia talking in Japanese for instructions and also to hear the spirits all speak it too. The instructions I get, but is it ever explained why the sudden language change or is it basically the creators decided this:

Either it was technically too difficult to make 2 language scripts for the briefings (you'd be surprised how awkwardly the game seems to be put together in some respects), or they were just cutting costs.

To make an in-universe reference, he probably got so used to the language that it was like speaking Japanese to him.

Likely they were making the game flow more naturally since the voice actors would have had a very hard time dealing with a new language and knowing what to emphasize, they'd do much better with japanese after all.

Of course, he already understands the language passingly. The normal scripts at that point have St.Yoto spoken but Japanese (English) written to reflect this. They *could've* done the same for briefings obviously, which brings me to the above conclusions.

I've gotta agree with the above that it was probably done to show how Yuuto got used to the language difference however.......I also partly think it was cause the creators would have had a hard time trying to create a full new language so they only did a very basic amount of words for the first chapter to show a difference in the worlds then switch languages once it was shown. Sad to say I didn't even notice at first.......I didn't noticed it switch to japanese again until Lemuria showed up speaking it xD.

As Phlebas was saying, you can repeat the same tutorials later when Yuuto knows the language enough and everybody sounds like they speak japanese. So they'd have to make two versions of tutotrials in Yoto and in Japanese. This would be a waste of time, hence the japanese in the tutorials from the start. The same goes for battle voices.

I used to think whenever Yuuto synchronized with Desire, he was able to understand to language. However thats not the case, as they speak japanese even in the very first battle, when Yuuto cant even activate Desire, yet alone use it.

One thing though, i dont remember exactly where, but i remember Yuuto activating Desire and being able to understand the world's language, and when he lost control of it again....they started with the gibberish again xD.

That was after one of the early audiences with the King of Rakios.

As for the battles being in Japanese even before he understands St. Yoto, I'm just gonna quote Phlebas:

You just have to suspend disbelief for the first couple battles. I frankly didn't find the language shift particularly jarring; rather, I'd have been much more annoyed if I couldn't figure out what people were doing in battle. The system is plenty overwhelming without a language barrier to understanding how to control your units.
